Report on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress
created on 24 Sep 2009
The aim of this report is to identify limits of GDP as an indicator of economic performance and social progress, and to check the feasibility of other measurement tools.
There have been concerns about the adequacy of current measures of economic performance and about the relevance of these figures as measures of societal well-being, as well as measures of economic, environmental, and social sustainability.
Therefore the "Commission on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress", chaired by Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz (Columbia University) was set up in 2008, on the initiative of French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
