New Commission Approved

On 9 February 2010, the European Parliament in Strasbourg approved the new Commission by 488 votes to 137, with 72 abstentions. Jose Manuel Barroso's team comprises 26 members, one from each EU country. Their term of office is five years.
New Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science is Maire Geoghegan-Quinn from Ireland. Since the year 2000 she has been a member of the European Court of Auditors.
Her main tasks will be
− to ensure the free circulation of researchers, knowledge, ideas and technology across the EU,
− to lead a cross-cutting approach to innovation,
− to improve coordination between EU and national/regional activities,
− to prepare the future policy framework for EU R&D policy, in particular the
future Framework Programme (FP8), and
− to increase the efficiency of EU support to scientific research, by rationalising and simplifying the existing funding mechanisms and adapting the current institutional and regulatory framework.
