The diversity of the research landscape in Austria correlates with the complexity of the organisation of research, technology and innovation policy. Political responsibility for the development of the innovation system is divided between several ministries, which manage their funding activities through agencies and research promotion funds. At the federal level, responsibility for research and technology policy as such is borne by three ministries, plus the Ministry of Finance, which has budgetary responsibility – with each ministry taking the lead for different agendas.
