Diversified Funding Streams for University-based Research: Impact of external project-based research funding on financial management in Universities:

To support modernisation of universities and financial sustainability of universities, the European Commission set up an expert group on “Diversified Funding Streams for University-based Research: Impact of external project-based research funding on financial management in universities“. The group was chaired by Sabine Herlitschka, Director of the Division of European & International Programmes at the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).
The report provides an overview of the universities' external research funding in Europe. It stresses common responsibility of universities, governance and research funding institutions in improving the financial sustainability of university-based research. The expert group recommends, amongst others, establishing full-cost accounting in universities, and more coherence in the framework conditions of research funding in the ERA.
