Research Funding
Climate Research in Austria is mainly funded by the the Federal Government. It directly finances the basic infrastructure of universities and non-university research institutions. Public funds also provide support for basic research as well as for applied research and technology development.
The Austrian institutional framework that provides support to climate change research and to the coordination of policies and measures is based on two committees: the Inter-ministerial Committee to Coordinate Measures to Protect Global Climate (IMC Climate Change) and the Kyoto Forum, coordinating climate change policies between the federal state, the federal provinces and the municipalities.
The main funding bodies for climate research in Austria are the following:
- Ministry of Science and Research: funding of national programmes, mission-oriented research
- Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management: funding of national programmes (PFEIL); mission-oriented research.
- Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology: funding of national programmes
- Austrian Academy of Sciences: research funding within the Academy's own programmes (IGBP, MAB, IHDP)
- Austrian National Bank research funding in all areas of science (economy, medicine, social sciences, humanities)
- Climate and Energy Fund: supports environmentally friendly measures in the transport sector, market penetration of climate-relevant and sustainable energy technologies, and research and development in the area of sustainable energy technologies and climate research.
