CIRCLE (Climate Impact Research Coordination for a Larger Europe) is an ERA-NET Initiative with the participation of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research (contributing partner and the Environment Agency Austria (WP Lead).

Climate change is increasingly seen as one of the greatest issues facing the world in the 21st century, and Europe is taking a leading role in responding to its challenges.

Whatever the success of mitigating climate change may be, certain impacts are unavoidable, and European countries will need to adapt to those impacts driven by certain vulnerabilities and exposures in the regions of Europe.

Their adaptation response must be informed by a coherent body of research, and it is CIRCLE´s prime objective to contribute to such efforts by aligning national research programmes. This process will be a strong support for the overall goal: Implementing a European Research Area (ERA) for the field of climate change.

CIRCLE-2 ERA-Net started in 2010. Its objectives are:

•Establishing a research funding network oriented towards Climate Change Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation (CCIVA) policy-relevant questions.
•Facilitating cooperation among Europe's national and regional CCIVA research programmes and their funders/managers.
•Promoting a common strategic agenda on relevant CCIVA research areas and coordinating it with European Framework Programmes, policies and objectives.
•Designing and funding joint initiatives and joint calls for transnational CCIVA research proposals on identified knowledge gaps or needs.
•Sharing knowledge and supporting European countries in their efforts to adopt appropriate climate adaptation strategies, action plans and measures.
•Optimising national and European investments on CCIVA research by increasing the effectiveness of its funding and maximising the policy relevance of its outcomes.

The objectives and promotors of CIRCLE-2 ERA-Net are highly congruent with those of the Joint Programming Initiative CliK'EU.
