The Preparatory Action on Defence Research (PADR) was conceptualised as the lead programme for the European Defence Research Programme (EDRP). In the meantime, it has been decided to merge the EDRP with the European Defence Fund (EDF). PADR was set up as a funding instrument to boost integration and competitiveness of the European defence research sector, with a focus on furthering projects that provide added value for the research sector and the armed forces. The programme is being implemented by the European Defence Agency (EDA) in coordination with the European Commission and the Member States.
The PADR budget of €90 millionis divided into €25 million for 2017, €40 million for 2018, and €25 million for 2019. Following a pilot project in 2016, the work programme for 2017 covered three topics: A technological demonstrator for enhanced situational awareness in a naval environment; research in technology and products in the context of force protection and soldier systems; and strategic technology foresight. Five projects have received funding, three of them in the context of force protection and soldier systems.
The submission period for project proposals to the 2018 calls expired on 28 June 2018. The calls focused on European high-performance, trustable (re)configurable system-on-a-chip or system-in-package components for defence applications; European high power laser effector; and strategic technology foresight, tackling the issue of the critical defence technological dependencies for the EU.
The next round of calls is expected in March 2019.
