Themendossier "Humanressourcen" / Thematic Dossier on Human Resources

CREATED ON 13 May 2016

The Thematic Dossier on Human Resources provides a synopsis of Austrian participation in two human resources-oriented programmes of Horizon 2020, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) and the European Research Council (ERC). It also provides an overview of relevant developments at European programme and policy level in the field of Human Resources (HR).

Due to their crucial importance for research and innovation, HR funding is a core objective of European and national research policy. At European level, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) as well as the European Research Council (ERC) in particular are regarded as showcase models of the HR programme portfolio in Horizon 2020. An analysis of Austrian performance in these programmes so far shows the following results:

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)
If we look at the overall outcome of the calls evaluated so far (2014 and partly 2015) for MSCA, Austrian research institutions have been awarded approx. € 33 million in this programme, which corresponds to a 2.6% share of the total MSCA funds awarded. The success rate of Austrian applicants in MSCA was thus similar to FP 7 (2.5% of funds).

European Research Council (ERC)
Researchers at Austrian institutions were awarded the highest number of ERC Grants so far during the first Horizon 2020 call; however, looking at the overall average, the success rate of Austrian ERC applications has been decreasing for several years. The Austrian share in ERC funds amounted to 2.0% during the first H2020 call (€ 34.51 million), in FP7 it amounted to 2.4%. This is presumably not least due to increased ERC efforts by other countries, such as Germany amongst others.
