Mariana Mazzucato presents report on Governing Missions
On 4 July 2019, Prof. Mariana Mazzucato published a report on Governing Missions in the European Union. The report, which has also been presented to ministers at the Informal Meeting of the Council Competitiveness in Helsinki today, contains 17 recommendations on how to best run missions to avoid pitfalls, encourage wide participation and reconnect ordinary people with European policymaking. In her report, Professor Mariana Mazzucato presents recommendations on three essential elements to deliver impactful missions in the European Union: How to engage citizens in missions; how to ensure that public organisations are optimally equipped to implement missions; and how to optimise finance and funding for missions.
Ms. Mazzucato concludes that Missions provide an opportunity to better connect with citizens, making it more visible how science, research and innovation contribute to the challenges they are faced with on a daily basis. Missions will increase the impact of public investments in research and innovation activities. This greater public engagement requires an effective portfolio management with flexible governance structures that enable cross-sectoral and crossinstitutional coordination.TOP
