EIT Urban Mobility is officially launched in Barcelona
On 19 November 2019, the European initiative EIT Urban Mobility was launched at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. The launch event represents the official start of this EIT Innovation Community which is coordinated by Barcelona. The initiative aims to finance projects that contribute to mobility solutions to accelerate the transition towards more liveable urban spaces.
The consortium for implementing this initiative consists of 48 partners from 15 countries, including cities such as Amsterdam, Munich and Milan, universities such as Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Technion and Aalto University, research centres like Fraunhofer, AMS and CTAG, and industry such as BMW, SEAT, TomTom and Siemens. The EIT (European Institute of Innovation and Technology) states that this is the first European initiative which brings together the knowledge triangle of universities, research centres and industry, plus cities.
After the launch of the first Call for Proposals in April this year, 60 projects were selected involving partners from all over Europe, which will be implemented during the following two years. EIT Urban Mobility will have a duration of 7 to 15 years, with a financial volume of € 1.6 billion, with up to 25% (or up to € 400 million) funded by the EU through the EIT.
