SFIC calls for stepping up international R&I cooperation to fight COVID-19
On 6 May 2020, the Strategic Forum for International S&T Cooperation (SFIC) adopted its opinion on “International R&I cooperation in view of the global COVID-19 pandemic”. In the paper, SFIC stresses that the solution to the COVID-19 pandemic can only be found through science, based on a coordinated international endeavour. SFIC acknowledges the various research and innovation activities which have started quickly at national, regional and international level with huge investements towards the same cause, but also finds that there is a lack of international dimension.
As a consequence, SFIC calls for an international mobilisation effort and for dedicated resources to support especially developing countries in their efforts to counter the crisis. Proposed measures include stepping up international R&I cooperation and coordinating actions with third countries and international organisations for fighting COVID-19, including the sharing of research results and relevant data.
