EU plans to increase research cooperation with South Korea
On 30 June 2020, Moon Jae-in, President of the Republic of Korea, Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, held a virtual bilateral summit. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of its establishment, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the EU/Republic of Korea Strategic Partnership. Amongst other topics, the leaders committed to explore opportunities to enhance research and innovation cooperation. The leaders also discussed the need for mutual support to ensure access to medical products, as well as cooperation in research and development of vaccines and medicines, to respond to emerging infectious diseases.
