EIT trains 40,000 young women in STEM
The European Commission has announced that the Girls Go Circular project of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), funded under Horizon Europe, has reached its ambitious target of training 40,000 girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) three years ahead of schedule.
This target is attained on 25 April, marking the 2024 edition of International Girls in Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Day. The day is celebrated every year to draw attention to the critical need for more girls and women in the ICT sector. This year's theme, ‘Leadership,' underscores the importance of strong female role models in STEM careers.
The Circular Learning Space – Girls Go Circular's educational platform – offers students challenge-based learning on a diverse range of topics like e-waste, climate change, health, semiconductors or robotics. The European Commission's Women in Digital Scoreboard highlights the pressing need to address gender disparity in STEM fields. Currently, women represent only 41% of STEM graduates, and a mere 19% of ICT specialists. By encouraging young women to explore traditionally male-dominated STEM fields, Girls Go Circular is not only closing gender gaps but also driving innovation vital to achieving the goals of the European Green Deal.
Girls Go Circular is an initiative coordinated by EIT RawMaterials.
