Coalition S outlines new priorities for 2026-2030
Coalition S has announced a renewed commitment to advancing Open Access and open science with its newly defined 2026-2030 strategic plan. Building on seven years of influence since the launch of Plan S, the coalition is broadening its focus to promote rapid, transparent and equitable sharing of trustworthy scientific knowledge.
Since its founding in 2018 with twelve members, Coalition S has become a significant force in driving global Open Access adoption. Its evolving mission now recognises the need for greater transparency, equity, and integrity in scholarly practices. This comes as the landscape faces challenges such as the prevalence of Article Processing Charges, which have raised ongoing equity concerns, and emerging opportunities and risks linked to artificial intelligence in research.
The updated strategy centers on three priorities:
- ensuring immediate and equitable Open Access for peer-reviewed articles,
- strengthening the digital infrastructure supporting Open Access,
- and developing financially sustainable publishing models that support fairness and broad participation.
The approach draws from consultation with members and stakeholders and reflects the need to balance national and global contexts in fostering open science. Implementation of the new strategy will proceed collaboratively in the coming months.
