Australia announces formal accession talks on Horizon Europe
During her visit to Australia, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have agreed to deepen cooperation on research and innovation, announcing the launch of formal negotiations for Australia’s association to Horizon Europe.
The Australian government will begin negotiations to enable association from 2027, giving Australian universities, research institutes and businesses access to the world’s largest pooled research fund.
Association to Horizon Europe would allow Australian organisations to lead and participate in cutting‑edge projects alongside European partners, boosting collaboration on shared priorities such as critical and emerging technologies, advanced computing, climate and clean energy, health, and critical minerals.
Both leaders underlined that closer ties under Horizon Europe would strengthen scientific excellence, support the development and responsible use of new technologies, and help drive economic growth and high‑skill jobs in both economies.
Once the association agreement enters into force, Australian researchers will be able to apply for Horizon Europe funding on equal terms with their European counterparts, reinforcing Europe–Australia links in global research and innovation.
