The Guild signs Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information
The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities has announced that it signed the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information on 28 May 2028. Launched in April 2024, the Barcelona Declaration calls for a systemic global shift towards open, transparent, and reproducible research information, a cornerstone of responsible research assessment and open science. More than 140 organisations across more than 30 countries have signed the declaration, including universities, research-performing organisations, research funders, and other organisations. The Guild reinforces the commitment of its member universities that have already endorsed the initiative, either individually or indirectly through affiliated networks.
By signing the Declaration, The Guild declares that it strengthens its commitment to, and active engagement for, open science, academic leadership, autonomy, and responsible research assessment. The Guild highlights that supporting open research information through channels such as the Barcelona Declaration also stimulates knowledge exchange among members and internal dialogue on the key issues driving the Declaration. However, the association points out that further progress will require sustained investment in open, interoperable and community-driven infrastructures, next to long-term funding models that can support reliable alternatives to commercial databases.
